Barnstone was founded in the desire to apply many years of collective experience in business advisory services in a more entrepreneurial environment. The founders of the business all had extensive experience in working with major enterprises in a number of different capacities, but longed to be directly involved in business decision-making and to participate in the associated risks and rewards.

Since its inception the company has launched a number of business ventures in areas such as telecommunications, technology solutions, property development and investment, healthcare and also in extending the richness of the business advisory experience into strategic consulting services. Over the last four years the business increasingly started to intensify its focus in the area of education – more specifically affordable private education in areas largely under-serviced in quality education. It is now making rapid strides in growing its education footprint. Three of the founders of the business are still in executive roles.

Business Philosophy

The Barnstone business philosophy rests on two distinctive, yet simple pillars. On the one side the company is a commercially orientated enterprise, which means we will seek to create value for the shareholders in whatever we do. On the other side we are driven by a real desire to play a meaningful role in contributing to society at large, especially as it pertains to sustainability and advancement of the quality of life and opportunities for all our people. We do not see this as an unrealistic aspirational statement, but believe by what we do and how we do it, we are meeting the desire to be a meaningful contributor. As part of this philosophy we embrace five sub-themes:

Owner Directors

Pierre Tredoux is a chartered accountant with more than 30 years’ business experience. Prior to starting Barnstone in 2005, Pierre was a partner and later the managing director of Deloitte Consulting in South Africa.

He has advised many of South Africa’s leading organisations on corporate strategy, structure and governance, as well as operational and performance improvement. He has worked in the financial services, manufacturing, oil and gas, mining and resources, communications, beverages, professional services, sport, tourism, leisure and gaming sectors both locally and internationally.

He is the non-executive chairman of Attacq Ltd, a listed capital growth fund, as well as the chairman of Atterbury Property Holdings, a leading privately owned property development company. He chairs the board of the Pretoria Urology Hospital.

Pierre is the driving force behind the establishment of Barnstone Education and Victus Capital.

Deon Crafford holds a master degree in clinical psychology from UJ. He is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in business consulting, social change and individual and team performance. From dealing with some of the most volatile and potentially violent conflict situations that accompanied the democratic transformation of South Africa, to the more subtle dynamics of corporate boardroom conflict, he has managed to assist organisations, teams and individuals to turn potentially adverse conditions into more positive and productive outcomes.

Over the last 20 years Deon served in partner and director roles at Deloitte Consulting and Barnstone Capital, where he led numerous engagements aimed at driving business transformation. He also served as leader for some of the largest consulting accounts. Deon specialises in strategy implementation, strategic programme leadership, post-deal merger and integration implementation and corporate governance. He has done extensive work with executive leadership teams in enhancing effectiveness and transformation leadership.

He has served in various roles outside the corporate environment, including the National Peace Accord Trust, Pretoria Child Welfare (as trustee) and the Presidential Committee on State Owned Enterprises. He has more than 25 years’ experience as a high performance consultant in a number of sporting codes.

Deon leads the Barnstone LS business and actively participates in identifying and implementing further growth opportunities for Barnstone Education.

Jacques Mulder holds a PhD in applied accounting and has more than 22 years’ banking and treasury management experience.  He specialises in financial management capacity development and organisational financial performance. Jacques has advised various government departments and state owned entities as well as the World Bank, which he regularly assists with capacity building projects in Africa. He has been instrumental in the development of Barnstone’s Health Care businesses Spiramed and Octans.
